The OKC Summer Classic Dog Shows Return to City

The Summer heats up with one of the year’s best events, as the Oklahoma City Summer Classic Dog Shows return to the Cox Convention Center June 26 through the 29th.

For four days each June, the dog population increases by about 2000 as show dogs from all across the country come to Oklahoma City to compete in the Summer Classic series.

The 2008 dog shows will kick off at 8am Thursday and run through Sunday, June 29. “These dogs are celebrities in their own right!” says Promotions Director Wendy Trussell Musgrove. “You may have seen many of these dogs on television at such shows as Westminster or the Eukanuba Classic. Along with the dog celebrities, we are also expecting dogs owned by celebrities such as Bill Cosby’s dogs in attendance.”

Now in it’s fifth year at the downtown location, the organizers of the event are very excited about the growth the shows have experienced. In 2003, there was an average of 1200 dogs each day. This year over 2000 dogs will be competing each day. That translates into a total entry of over 8,000 dogs over the course of the series!

After an unfortunate scheduling mishap, the shows were at an all time low of 600 dogs when substitute accommodations had to be arranged in 2002. The decision to take the chance at a large venue has proven to be a successful one as the shows have become some of the largest attended in the country and is now one of the few dog shows being nationally televised.

Spectators will see many of the over 160 American Kennel Club (AKC) recognized breeds. These dogs will be competing in conformation as well as Obedience, Rally and more. “Watching dogs compete in obedience is a lot of fun for visitors,” says obedience chairman Julie McIlwraith. “Watching dogs respond to nothing more than hand signals give spectators encouragement to work with their own pets at home.”

Behind the scenes tours will be held many times each day. These tours give insider information on how the shows are put together. Ever want to know what it takes to get a dog ready for the show ring? Join a tour and get your questions answered!

Between watching the showdogs compete to shopping for your own canine housemates, there is something for everyone at the Summer Classic Dog Shows.

Dog Show hours are 8am –6pm each day. Final Group competition begins at around 3pm each day. Tickets are available at the Cox Convention Center Box office. Tickets are $7 for adults and $2 children under 12. Free for kids under 3. Discount coupons available at all metro Little Ceasar’s locations.

The Oklahoma City Kennel Club has been hosting club shows since formation in 1924. The Mid Del Tinker Kennel Club was formed in 1962.

OKC Summer Classic Dog Shows are sponsored in part by Purina, Clear Channel Communications and the Oklahoma City Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.
