UCO'S BROADWAY TONIGHT AND COLLEGE OF ARTS, MEDIA AND DESIGN COLLABORATE TO STAGE CONCERT PERFORMANCE OF 'CAROUSEL'
The University of Central Oklahoma's Broadway Tonight series and the College of Arts, Media & Design will present the concert performance of the musical "Carousel," starring Academy Award-winning actress Shirley Jones and singers Patrick Cassidy and Miss America 2007 Lauren Nelson, at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 25 and at 2:30 p.m., Oct. 26 at the Rose State Performing Arts Theatre.
The production was moved to Rose State due to the construction at UCO's Mitchell Hall Theater.
This is the first time the concert performance of Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic musical has been staged in Oklahoma City and visiting director Paul Looney said the audience is in for a real treat.
"The city and the surrounding area have never seen anything like this before," said Looney. "This is more than a concert. It's a unique and intimate experience. My focus is to give a heightened experience to the glorious and ingenious score that features such musical hits as 'June is Busting Out All Over,' 'You'll Never Walk Alone,' and 'If I Loved You.'"
For this production, actress and singer Jones will play the part of Cousin Nettie, singer Cassidy will play the part of carnival barker Billy Bigelow, and Nelson, will play the part of Julie Jordan, Billy's love interest. Clif' Warren, best known for his 25 years on the local TV show "Danny's Day," will serve as the concert narrator.
The UCO Symphony, under the direction of Dr. Ralph Morris, along with more than 75 local performers, including several UCO students, will accompany the main cast.
Broadway Tonight Director Jon Finch said that working with visiting director Looney, founder of Theatre Tuscaloosa in Alabama and the Alabama Stage and Screen Hall of Fame, will give the students an opportunity to learn from one of the leading theatrical directors in the United States.
"We are fortunate to have an individual of his talent working with our students giving them direction beyond that of the classroom," said Finch.
Dr. John Clinton, dean of UCO's College of Arts, Media & Design said the entire college is energized about the group effort with Broadway Tonight.
"Bringing the best of both organizations together is a win-win situation for our students, faculty and for our community. We hope people will come out and see this wonderful production."
Tickets to the performance are $60, $49.50 and $44.50. To purchase tickets, call the Civic Center Box Office at (405) 297-2264.
Veteran singing actress Shirley Jones and her son Patrick Cassidy, who were co-stars in the Broadway revival of 42nd Street, will again share a stage this summer.
Jones and Cassidy will star in a concert version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel at the Rose State Performing Arts Theatre as a part of the UCO Broadway Tonight Series. In addition, the former Miss America and returning UCO student Lauren Nelson will be a part of the performance singing such musical hits as, “If I Loved You,” “June is Busting out All Over” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”
Jones, who played Julie Jordan in the film of Carousel, will play the maternal Nettie Fowler in the upcoming concerts. Jones will get the chance to sing two Rodgers and Hammerstein classics, "June Is Bustin' Out All Over" and "You'll Never Walk Alone." Cassidy will play carnival barker Billy Bigelow.
